RE: Seasonal Reminders

REDUCE THE RISK OF FROZEN PIPES:

Cold weather brings with it a chance of pipes and water mains freezing and breaking. The risk is greater with longer stretches of extremely cold weather. Please consider the following tips to help avoid frozen pipes in your home.

Normal Winter Conditions:

  • Make sure the cold air return for your furnace is pointed away from the water service. Water service enters most home in the basement through the floor; the water meter is attached.
  • Leave cupboard doors in your kitchen and bathroom sinks open to allow heat in.
  • Keep your furnace above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Shut off and drain the pipes leading to outside faucets.
  • Wrap foam insulation around pipes most-susceptible to freezing.
  • Seal air leaks in your home and garage.
  • If you are away, have someone check your home.
  • If you are way for an extended period of time, ask the City to turn off your water at the street. There is a charge of $30 for each connection and $30 for each disconnection.

Extreme Cold Conditions:

  • Monitor the temperature of your water. If the water temp drops below 38 degrees Fahrenheit, leave a cold-water tap running at a steady stream of about ¼” in diameter (about the diameter of a No. 2 pencil.) If you run your water to prevent freezing lines, please notify the City and we will adjust your water and/or sewer bill accordingly. If you do not notify the City that you are running water to avoid a freeze-up, you will be charged for the water used. You can call, email or stop into City Hall to make the notification.
  • The City will notify residents, via the website and/or social media, if/when the City’s water reads below 38 degrees Fahrenheit, as a helpful reminder.

SNOW REMOVAL ORDINANCE

Parking regulations are in effect during a snow emergency and during snow removal, whenever snow falls to a depth of two inches or greater. Snow will be removed in accordance with City policy. Vehicles in violation may be towed at the owner’s expense. Your patience during snow removal throughout the City is greatly appreciated.
